I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard two boys begging for my help. I assumed it had something to do with Sakev. I hurried with them to the lobby.

Nothing could’ve prepared me for what I saw.

Sakev, carrying an unconscious man slung over his shoulders like a sack of grain, stumbling through the clinic, flanked by officials.

“Doctor, please!” Sakev wailed. “This poor man! He’s been attacked! I did everything I could! Bestow your mercy on him! He doesn’t deserve this cruel fate!”

You’ve got to be joking. I didn’t have to fake the shock on my face.

I knew I should’ve given Sakev more specific instructions. To his credit, whatever he was doing worked.

“What happened?” I asked Skit.

“He says a hybrid attacked the man.” Skit looked ready to bolt.

“Bring him into the examination room at once!” I declared, my eyes wide as I clamored to make room for the victim.

“Doctor, can you save this man?” I half-expected Sakev to put the poor bastard at my feet as tribute. Instead, he laid the man on the table with exceptional care.

“Sakev’s really taking this hard, isn’t he?” Tona observed.

“If I’d been there just a moment sooner, this poor soul would’ve been spared,” Sakev stared daggers at Tona, who looked cowed.

“Sakev, it isn’t your fault!” I cried with the same affected dramatic flair, gripping his shoulders hard enough to turn my knuckles white. “Don’t you dare blame yourself! I’m going to do whatever it takes to save this man’s life.”

“Sakev’s a bit shaken, ma’am. I think a sedative might help him calm down, if you have some to spare.” Skit looked so pale I was tempted to offer him the sedative instead.

“I’ll get right on that. Will you see to the patients in the waiting area? Those poor people see something shocking every time they come here. It’s a wonder they don’t think this is a madhouse.” Skit nodded and left, glad to put distance between himself and the unconscious victim.

“I can escort Sakev back to his room so he can recuperate.” Tona offered.

“No!” I said quickly. “I, uh, need him here to deliver a witness account. He was the only one who saw the attack, correct?”

“That we know of,” Tona nodded.

“Perhaps you and your colleagues could try to find more witnesses,” I prompted. Anything to get him out of here. Tona hesitated. “Please! A man’s life is at stake! The more information I can get, the better his chances are.”

“Okay!” Tona hurried out of the room, muttering into a commlink.

I shut the door behind him and locked it before whirling on Sakev.

“What the hell was that?” I demanded. I wanted to look stern, but the ridiculousness of the situation got the best of me. I couldn’t stop the laughter from bubbling up and spilling out.

I backed into the door, leaning against it for support as laughter wracked my body. I gasped for air like a fish out of water. Tears streamed down my cheeks. My stomach muscles began to ache.

“What’s wrong with you?”

My inability to stop laughing made Sakev laugh, too.
